What We Use, We Must Help Renew

Healthy systems survive when those who benefit also strengthen what creates the benefit

We usually think about value when something reaches us. We ask whether it works, helps, saves time, or solves problems. We rarely ask what had to remain healthy to produce it. Yet every useful system depends upon something underneath it. Someone must keep building, learning, repairing, and renewing.

A forest makes this relationship easy to see. Trees can provide wood for generations when forests keep regenerating. But harvesting can eventually exceed renewal. The forest then loses more than trees. It begins losing its ability to remain a forest.

Bilgin Ibryam used this idea to describe open source software. Open source projects can take years to build. They depend on contributors, reviewers, users, organizations, knowledge, and trust. Businesses can then build valuable products upon this shared foundation. The danger begins when value leaves faster than support returns.

But this idea reaches far beyond software.

The Invisible System Behind the Value

Almost everything valuable comes from a system.

A successful business depends upon capable workers and reliable suppliers. A community depends upon trust, cooperation, infrastructure, and local knowledge. A school depends upon teachers who continue developing their abilities. A family depends upon relationships that require attention across generations.

We usually notice the output because we can see it. The capability producing that output is easier to overlook.

This creates a dangerous illusion. We begin treating continuing benefits as though they appear automatically. We harvest the visible value while ignoring the system producing it.

Eventually, the hidden foundation weakens.

Extraction Is a Broken Loop

Extraction is usually described as taking too much.

That is true, but it misses something deeper.

The real problem is not simply how much leaves. The important question is whether enough returns. A healthy system needs some way to regenerate what creates its value.

Consider a simple cycle.

Capability → Contribution → Value → Renewal → Greater Capability

People develop knowledge, judgment, skills, relationships, and productive resources. They use those capabilities to contribute something useful. Their contribution creates value for others. Part of that value returns to strengthen the capability that produced it.

The cycle can continue.

Remove renewal, however, and the same system behaves differently.

Capability → Contribution → Value → Extraction → Capability Decline

The system may continue producing for some time. That can hide the damage.

A forest still contains timber while it is shrinking. An experienced worker can continue performing while becoming exhausted. Infrastructure can keep functioning the maintenance is postponed. A community can continue cooperating while trust slowly disappears.

Decline often becomes visible only after regeneration has already weakened.

Sustainability Is Not Enough

This suggests an important distinction.

We often talk about sustainability as using fewer resources. That matters. Restraint can prevent unnecessary damage.

But restraint alone does not create renewal.

A healthy forest must grow. Skilled people must continue learning. Infrastructure must be maintained. Institutions must develop new leadership. Relationships must receive attention. Knowledge must pass from one generation to another.

The stronger goal is therefore regeneration.

Regeneration asks a different question.

Does our participation leave the system capable of continuing its work?

That changes how we think about responsibility.

Contribution Must Include Renewal

We usually think contribution means producing something useful.

That is only part of contribution.

A teacher contributes by teaching students. But experienced teachers also strengthen education by mentoring younger teachers. A craftsperson contributes through today's work. The craft survives when knowledge also reaches another generation.

Organizations face the same challenge.

A company can extract extraordinary productivity from talented people. That may improve short term results. But if people stop learning, cooperating, or trusting leadership, productive capability eventually falls.

Good organizations therefore invest in what produces tomorrow's results.

They develop people. They maintain assets. They preserve useful knowledge. They build relationships. They create room for experimentation and learning.

These investments can look inefficient when measured only against today's output.

Over time, they may be what keeps the system alive.

The Commons Need More Than Good Intentions

Shared resources make this problem especially difficult.

When many people receive benefits, responsibility can become unclear. Everyone has reasons to consume. Fewer people may feel responsible for renewal.

That does not mean shared systems inevitably fail.

It means healthy commons need ways of connecting benefit with responsibility.

People need understandable rules. Contributors need recognition and support. Users need ways to participate. Institutions need feedback. Resources need maintenance. Governance must adapt when conditions change.

The important question is not simply who owns something.

It is who helps keep it capable.

That question applies to software, neighborhoods, organizations, knowledge, infrastructure, and natural resources.

Capability Is the Renewable Resource Beneath Everything

Money matters. Technology matters. Land and infrastructure matter.

But none can renew themselves.

People decide what to build. People maintain systems. People discover problems. People cooperate. People learn from mistakes. People adapt when circumstances change.

Human capability therefore sits beneath many other forms of value.

That capability includes knowledge and skill. It also includes judgment, curiosity, responsibility, cooperation, and learning.

When systems strengthen these qualities, they become more adaptable.

When systems consume them without renewal, they become fragile.

This gives us another way to judge economic and social systems. We can ask not only how much value they produce. We can ask what happens to the people and institutions producing that value.

Are they becoming more capable?

Or are we quietly consuming their capability?

Every Contribution Changes Reality

Renewal does not mean preserving everything unchanged.

Forests change. Communities change. Technologies change. Organizations change.

Healthy systems must adapt.

People act using their present understanding. Their actions create consequences. Those consequences reveal something about reality. People can then learn, adjust, and act again.

The cycle becomes larger.

Capability → Contribution → Changed Reality → Learning → Renewed Capability → Better Contribution

This is why regeneration cannot simply mean replacing whatever was consumed.

Sometimes the old capability is no longer enough.

The world changes. New problems appear. Old knowledge becomes incomplete. Institutions designed for yesterday encounter conditions they never expected.

Renewal must therefore include learning.

A regenerative system does not merely restore its previous capacity. It develops the ability required for the reality emerging around it.

Stewardship Means Leaving Capability Behind

This brings us to stewardship.

We often imagine stewardship as protecting assets. Land should remain productive. Infrastructure should remain useful. Financial resources should not disappear.

But perhaps the most important inheritance is capability.

Can the next generation understand what we built?

Can they maintain it?

Can they improve it?

Can they recognize when circumstances require change?

Can they cooperate well enough to solve problems we never anticipated?

A system becomes truly durable when it can continue learning after its original builders are gone.

That may be the deeper meaning of regeneration.

We are not trying to freeze the forest.

We are protecting its ability to keep becoming a forest.

What We Use, We Must Help Renew

Every day, we benefit from systems built by other people.

We inherit knowledge we did not discover. We use infrastructure we did not construct. We enter institutions shaped before our arrival. We depend upon communities of people whose contributions we may never see.

Receiving those benefits is not wrong.

The question is what happens next.

Do we merely consume what previous capability created? Or does some part of our participation strengthen what comes afterward?

That question can guide individuals, businesses, communities, and institutions.

What we use, we must help renew.

Not because everything must remain unchanged. Not because every beneficiary owes the same contribution. And not because regeneration can always prevent decline.

We help renew because continuing value requires continuing capability.

A healthy system does more than create value today.

It leaves behind the ability to create value tomorrow.
