Stability gives us direction. Adaptation helps us preserve what matters when disruption changes the conditions around us.
We often speak about stability and change as opposites. Stable things stay where they are. Changing things move somewhere else. Life quickly teaches us that the relationship is more complicated. Sometimes the only way to remain stable is to keep adjusting.
Thomas Oppong approaches this problem through Einstein’s interest in invariance. In physics, an invariant remains unchanged through certain transformations. Oppong brings that idea into everyday life. He asks us to notice what keeps mattering while everything around it changes.
His examples are familiar. Technologies change, but judgment remains valuable. Productivity tools change, but focused attention still matters. Financial markets move, but disciplined saving remains useful. Health trends come and go, while sleep, movement, and good food remain important.
Oppong’s lesson seems simple. Find what endures and build around it.
But another idea is hiding inside that lesson.
Sometimes we must change because something important should remain stable.
Stability Does Not Always Mean Stillness
Think about walking.
You remain upright, but your body never becomes completely still. Your weight shifts. Your muscles adjust. Each foot moves to a new position.
Your stability depends on those adjustments.
Some forms of stability resemble a steady state. The system settles into a condition and remains there. Other forms depend on repeated movement through changing states.
The larger pattern remains stable because smaller parts keep changing.
Human life often works this way.
A family can remain committed while its members change roles. A person can preserve important values while changing careers. A business can maintain its purpose while changing how it serves people.
The visible form changes.
The deeper purpose can continue.
Invariants Give Change Direction
This is where Oppong’s idea becomes especially useful.
We should not treat every part of life as equally changeable. Some things deserve greater continuity than others.
Purpose usually deserves more stability than strategy. Values should normally move more slowly than techniques. Important relationships deserve more protection than routines.
Tools belong closer to the adaptive side.
A tool exists to serve something deeper.
You may replace a calendar application while preserving your need to organize time. You may adopt new learning technology while preserving your commitment to learning. You may change a business process while preserving the purpose it serves.
This gives us a practical principle.
Protect what matters. Adapt what serves it.
Now change has direction.
We are not adapting merely because the world changed. We adapt because changed conditions may require new ways of protecting what remains important.
Be Careful What You Call Permanent
There is a danger here.
Physics can define invariants precisely. Human life cannot do this so easily.
We can mistake habits for principles. We can mistake traditions for values. We can mistake familiar institutions for permanent necessities.
Something may have lasted a long time without deserving to last forever.
So we need a better question than, “What never changes?”
Ask instead, “What deserves continuity?”
Then keep testing the answer.
Judgment matters because decisions have consequences. Trust matters because people depend upon one another. Learning matters because conditions keep changing.
These are durable anchors because they repeatedly prove useful.
But even anchors require examination.
Reality gets the final vote.
Disruption Is the Test
We often discover what matters when something stops working.
A technology changes an industry. A business model fails. A family moves somewhere unfamiliar. An institution encounters conditions its rules never anticipated.
Disruption breaks the existing equilibrium.
Our natural response is often restoration. We want to return to normal. We want to rebuild what existed before.
Sometimes that makes sense.
Sometimes it does not.
Disruption may reveal weaknesses already hidden inside the old arrangement. Returning to the previous equilibrium would simply restore those weaknesses.
Then adaptation must do something more valuable than repair.
It must create learning.
We try something different. We observe the result. We compare what happened with what we expected. Then we adjust again.
Eventually, a new workable pattern may emerge.
Not the old equilibrium restored.
A new equilibrium learned.
Adaptive Stability
This is what I mean by adaptive stability.
It is not resistance to change.
It is the ability to preserve what deserves continuity while changing what circumstances require.
Sometimes stability looks like remaining steady. Sometimes stability requires movement through different states. Sometimes disruption teaches us that the old stable state should not be restored at all.
The difficult part is deciding what belongs where.
What should remain stable?
What should remain adaptable?
What should we stop protecting?
What must we learn?
These questions matter more than simply becoming better at change.
Without stable purposes, adaptation becomes drift. We keep changing without knowing why.
Without adaptation, stability becomes rigidity. We keep protecting yesterday even when yesterday no longer works.
Adaptive stability requires both.
Learning Changes the Equilibrium
There is another important consequence.
Adaptation alone is not enough.
A person can react repeatedly without becoming wiser. An organization can keep changing procedures without understanding why problems continue. A society can move from one response to another while repeating the same mistakes.
Learning changes that pattern.
We observe what happened. We compare the result with what we expected. We examine where our assumptions failed. Then we carry that knowledge into the next decision.
Something has now changed inside the system.
Capability has grown.
That matters because the next equilibrium is no longer created by exactly the same people who entered the disruption. They know something they did not know before.
The system has learned.
Capability Is What We Carry Forward
No equilibrium lasts forever.
Technology moves again. Circumstances change. People age. Institutions face new demands. Another disruption eventually arrives.
We cannot eliminate that uncertainty.
But something can accumulate across these cycles.
Capability.
Each disruption gives us another opportunity to observe. Each adaptation produces consequences. Each consequence can teach us something about our assumptions.
If we pay attention, we do not merely reach another stable state.
We become better at finding one.
A capable person does not need every circumstance to remain predictable. They can observe, judge, experiment, learn, and adjust.
A capable family can change roles without losing its relationships. A capable organization can revise its methods without abandoning its purpose. A capable community can respond to disruption without waiting for yesterday to return.
Capability makes adaptive stability possible.
Stability Is Part of a Larger Cycle
This brings us back to Oppong’s original insight.
He asks us to notice what remains important while everything else changes. That gives us anchors. Without them, adaptation has no direction.
Adaptive stability adds another question.
What must we change so that what matters can endure?
That question changes how we see disruption.
Disruption is no longer only something that threatens stability. It can also reveal what no longer works.
Adaptation becomes more than reaction. It becomes an opportunity to test our understanding.
Learning becomes more than acquiring information. It becomes improved capability.
And capability allows us to establish a new equilibrium suited to changed conditions.
But the cycle does not stop there.
Capability enables contribution. Contribution changes relationships, institutions, communities, and circumstances. Our actions become part of somebody else’s reality.
Changed reality then produces new questions.
New learning begins.
This means adaptive stability is not a destination. It is a living cycle.
Equilibrium → Disruption → Adaptation → Learning → Capability → New Equilibrium → Contribution → Changed Reality → New Learning
Then the cycle begins again.
The goal is not to build a life where nothing changes.
It is to become capable of recognizing what deserves continuity, changing what no longer serves it, and learning from what happens next.
Perhaps that is the deeper lesson inside Oppong’s idea of invariance.
Do not merely ask what stays the same.
Ask what deserves to endure.
Then become capable enough to help it endure through change.
